Foundation or Higher GCSE Maths: Which Tier?
Published21 October 2026
Understand the difference between GCSE Maths tiers, what to ask your child’s school and how to choose matching revision support.
Start with the tier studied at school
Before choosing revision materials or tuition, ask your child’s teacher which GCSE Maths tier they are studying and which exam board they use. A tuition group’s target grades do not determine the school’s exam entry.
Foundation assesses grades 1–5. Higher assesses grades 4–9. These ranges overlap, so aiming for a grade 4 or 5 does not, by itself, tell you which tier is appropriate. The AQA specification linked below confirms these grade ranges.
Look at more than one test result
Discuss recent classwork, mock papers and the teacher’s assessment of secure topics. Ask which skills need improvement and how your child responds to unfamiliar questions.
A disappointing test is a reason to investigate the gaps. It should not lead to an immediate decision about changing tier without speaking to the school.
Match practice to the learner
Use materials for the correct tier and exam board. Start with a manageable topic, check the method, then try a question independently before moving to a mixed set.
Students who need stronger foundations can practise fractions, percentages, ratio and equations before tackling more demanding combinations of skills.
Choose a group that matches school teaching
MathsTutorHelp’s Foundation programme targets grades 3–5; the Higher programme focuses on grades 6–9. These are the tuition groups’ aims, rather than the full ranges of grades available on each exam tier.
If you are unsure which group suits your child, send their year group, school tier, current grade and target grade. Mr Sheraz can discuss suitable support while the school confirms the exam entry.
